Ticks in Minecraft

The server counts time in ticks: 20 ticks a second when it isn't lagging. Delays in plugin configs and commands are often given in ticks: 100 ticks is 5 seconds, 1200 is a minute.

A game day is 24,000 ticks — 20 minutes of real time. It counts from 06:00: /time set day is 1000 ticks (07:00), noon 6000 (12:00), night 13,000 (19:00), midnight 18,000 (00:00).

If the server can't fit a tick into 50 ms, TPS drops below 20 — and everything measured in ticks stretches out in real time. Find the cause with the spark profiler. DGuard takes 0.03 % of one core on the main thread and doesn't affect TPS by itself.

FAQ

How many ticks are in a second?

20, when the server runs without lag. One tick is 50 ms.

How long is a Minecraft day?

24,000 ticks — 20 minutes of real time.

What time does /time set day set?

1000 ticks, 07:00 on the game clock. Noon is 6000, night 13,000, midnight 18,000.

Why does a plugin's timer run slower than it should?

Most likely the server is lagging and TPS is below 20: ticks come less often and time measured in ticks stretches. Check TPS and MSPT.
