In short: for a new server pick the latest version — 26.3 as of October 2026 — if your key plugins already support it. PaperMC marks only 26.3 and 26.2 as supported and says plainly that exploit fixes aren't backported to old versions, and the launcher gives players the latest release by default. Keep 1.21.11 only if you can't do without it: PaperMC hasn't supported it since 15 June 2026. ViaBackwards lets in players on older clients, ViaVersion lets newer clients onto an older server. You need Java 25 for 26.x and Java 21 for 1.20–1.21.11.
Which versions matter in 2026
| Version | Released | PaperMC status | Java for Paper |
|---|---|---|---|
| 26.3 | 15 September 2026 | Supported | 25 |
| 26.2 | 16 June 2026 | Supported | 25 |
| 26.1–26.1.2 | 24 March — 9 April 2026 | Unsupported: 26.1.2 since 26 July 2026 | 25 |
| 1.21–1.21.11 | 13 June 2024 — 9 December 2025 | Unsupported: 1.21.11 since 15 June 2026, last Paper build #132 on 11 May 2026 | 21 |
| 1.20.x and older | 2023 and earlier | Unsupported | 21 for 1.20.x, older — 17 and below |
Don't let the numbers confuse you. Since 2026 Mojang names versions by the year and the number of the drop within it: 26.1 is the first drop of 2026, 26.1.1 and 26.1.2 are its hotfixes. That's why 26.1 comes right after 1.21.11.
What PaperMC says about old versions
PaperMC is the team behind Paper, which it describes as the most widely used Minecraft server. In the downloads API every version has a status: as of 19 October 2026 only 26.3 and 26.2 are "supported". The 26.2 announcement says it outright: update to the latest version of Paper, because exploit fixes aren't backported once a new version has been stable for a while.
Builds of old versions can still be downloaded, but they no longer change: the last 1.21.11 build came out on 11 May 2026. Exploits and dupes found after that stay open on such a version, and protecting the server falls to plugins.
Which clients can join
On its own a server accepts only clients of its own version. The Minecraft launcher ships a default Latest release installation whose version can't be changed, so a player who hasn't configured anything arrives on the newest client. The Via plugins bridge the gap:
| Players join with… | What to install on the server |
|---|---|
| Versions newer than the server | ViaVersion |
| Versions older than the server, down to 1.9 | ViaVersion + ViaBackwards (as a plugin it runs on 1.10 servers and newer) |
| 1.7.x–1.8.x | ViaVersion + ViaBackwards + ViaRewind |
The takeaway: a server on the latest version with ViaBackwards accepts both new and old players, while a server on an old version depends on how quickly ViaVersion ships — per its README, a few days after a game update. Installation, commands and protocol caveats are in ViaVersion.
Plugins: the real constraint
- Check each plugin's version list. On Modrinth, Hangar and SpigotMC every release lists the game versions it supports. Check your key plugins — permissions, protection, economy, anticheat — before you choose.
- Old plugins may not start on 26.x. Since 26.1 Mojang ships the server unobfuscated, and PaperMC warned that plugins reaching into server internals by Spigot-mapped names won't work on 26.1 — on Paper or Spigot.
- On an old version, plugin updates stop. For example, WorldGuard's last Modrinth release tagged 1.21.11 is 7.0.17 from 30 May 2026; 7.0.18 and newer are tagged 26.x only.
- Forks catch up with Paper later. In October 2026 the Leaf download page has only experimental builds for 26.3, which the team itself doesn't recommend for production. The cores are compared in the best server core.
Which Java you need
| Paper version | Recommended Java |
|---|---|
| 26.1 and newer | Java 25 |
| 1.20–1.21.11 | Java 21 |
| 1.17–1.19 | Java 17 |
| 1.16.5 | Java 16 |
| 1.12–1.16.4 | Java 11 |
| 1.7.10–1.11 | Java 8 |
Moving from 1.21.x to 26.x also means changing Java on the machine or in the host's panel. The Java version picker shows the check and install commands for your version.
How to choose: by situation
- A new server. The latest version, if your key plugins support it. ViaBackwards lets in players on older clients.
- A server already on 1.21.11. Plan the move: PaperMC no longer fixes it. Until your plugins are ready, stay put and let newer clients in through ViaVersion, then upgrade step by step with a backup.
- A Velocity network. Keep the lobby and the modes on one version — that's simplest — and install Via on the game servers. How a network fits together is in Minecraft server networks.
- Old versions: 1.8, 1.12.2, 1.16.5. PaperMC doesn't support them, they need Java 8–16, and as the WorldGuard example shows, plugins stop shipping for old versions over time. Players on old clients can still join a new server through ViaBackwards and ViaRewind.
Server version and the anticheat
An anticheat is one of the plugins most tied to the version: it parses packets and movement physics. DGuard — the best anticheat for a modern Minecraft server — runs on Paper and Leaf across 1.21–26.3, so within that range the choice is yours. The main version is 1.21.11: DGuard is tested on it and runs on live servers; the other versions are supported but not yet proven on live servers. Folia isn't supported, and the current list is on the versions page.
Players on 1.21–26.x clients who join through ViaVersion get the same checks as everyone else. DGuard always needs the latest PacketEvents release next to it — update it whenever you change the server version; the DGuard panel shows when it's outdated and tells you.
FAQ
Which Minecraft version should I use for my server?
For a new server, the latest one (26.3 as of October 2026) if your key plugins support it: PaperMC supports only 26.3 and 26.2. The ViaBackwards plugin lets in players on older clients.
Which Java does a 26.x server need?
Java 25: Paper 26.1 and newer requires it. For 1.20–1.21.11 PaperMC recommends Java 21.
Does Paper still support 1.21.11?
No: the PaperMC downloads API marks 1.21.11 unsupported since 15 June 2026, and its last build came out on 11 May 2026. You can still download it, but no more fixes are coming.
Can a 1.21 client join a 26.3 server?
Yes, if the server runs ViaVersion and ViaBackwards: together they accept clients older than the server down to 1.9. Without them the server only accepts its own version.
Can I downgrade the server version later?
No. Once the world is upgraded, PaperMC doesn't let it go back to an older version — the only way back is a backup taken before the upgrade.
