How to promote a Minecraft server and keep players

Server lists, Discord, videos and word of mouth bring players in; a clear idea, a first ten minutes without confusion, visible rules and fair play make them stay. Here are the channels that bring players, Mojang's rules on the Minecraft name and on sponsored videos, and what makes a newcomer come back tomorrow.

In short: first put into one sentence what sets your server apart from a hundred similar ones. Then list it on server lists and set up voting, start a Discord, work with video creators and put up a simple website. But promotion only brings people in: they stay when it's clear from the first minutes what to do, the rules are visible and cheaters don't ruin the game. No amount of promotion saves a server that loses its newcomers.

A concept and a niche

There are plenty of survival, anarchy and minigame servers, so the player's question is simple: why this one? The answer has to fit into the server-list description and the first line of the MOTD.

  • The mode and its twist. Not "survival with plugins" but what others don't have: a player-run economy, month-long seasons, hardcore without claims, vanilla with nothing pay-to-win.
  • Who it's for. Newcomers, PvP players, builders, groups of friends — that shapes the rules, the balance and the tone.
  • The version. Pick the main version for your core and plugins; ViaVersion lets in players on newer clients, and Geyser lets in Bedrock players on phones and consoles.
  • The scale. One server is easier to fill than a network of five modes with two players each. Build a network when one mode has outgrown its server: see Minecraft network.

Your name and the Minecraft name: Mojang's rules

Mojang lets you mention Minecraft in your server's description but not make it the main word of the name. The Minecraft Usage Guidelines give an example: "Kotoba Miners: A Minecraft server for Redstone builds" is fine, "Minecraft - the ultimate Kotoba server for Redstone" is not. The Minecraft logo and brand font can't be part of your own branding.

WhatWhat Mojang's rules say
NameMinecraft only in a secondary part of the name or in the description, never the dominant word
Logo, fontNot allowed in your own logo and branding
Looking officialNothing that suggests the server is official or approved by Mojang or Microsoft
DisclaimerA prominent "NOT AN OFFICIAL MINECRAFT …" notice on your website, listing and other materials
ContactClear who owns the server and how to reach them. A chat or forum link doesn't count as a contact method
DomainMay include "Minecraft" if it doesn't look official and isn't mainly a way to make money, affiliate income included

Server lists and voting

Server lists are directories where players pick a server by mode, version and player count. Your listing is your shop window: a short description of what's different, an honest list of modes, the version, and links to your Discord and website.

  • The server has to answer pings. Lists read the player count and description from the ping response. With enable-status=false the server looks offline to them — keep it true. The list description comes from motd; more in MOTD and server icon and server.properties.
  • Voting. Many server lists let players vote for a server and can notify the server about each vote over the Votifier protocol, so you can reward the voter. The NuVotifier plugin receives the votes and a separate plugin hands out rewards — set-up in Votifier.
  • Each list's own rules. Every list has its own terms for listings and voting — read them before you design rewards.

Discord: where the community lives

The game closes, the community stays in Discord: news, season announcements, reports, appeals and chat between sessions. A minimal set of channels: news, rules, general chat, player reports and punishment appeals.

Connect Discord to the game: DiscordSRV is an open-source bridge between the server chat and Discord channels, so players see the server is alive even when they aren't in game. Set-up is in DiscordSRV. How to split reports and appeals between moderators is in moderation team.

YouTube, TikTok and streamers

Videos from your server are the most direct way to show what it's like. Mojang's rules let creators post gameplay on YouTube, Twitch and other sites and earn ad revenue, as long as the video is free to watch and adds the creator's own content, such as commentary.

Stories work better than "come join us": the first day of a season, an event, a player build, a tournament. Give creators early access and let your moderators know when filming is on.

Website and domain

A website isn't there to look pretty: it puts the address, version, rules, Discord link and the owner's contact on one page. If you sell anything, Mojang requires you to show all content and prices before a person joins or signs up — details in monetization and the EULA.

A domain is easier to remember than an IP, and with a non-default port an SRV record spares players the :port in the address — see server IP and port.

A newcomer's first 10 minutes

A newcomer decides whether to stay almost at once. If they spawn in the middle of nowhere, can't tell where to go and get killed by the first player with a cheat, there won't be a second visit. Walk the path yourself from a fresh account.

  1. 1

    A clear spawn

Short signposts: where to go, how to start, where the rules are. No mazes of signs.

  2. 2

    Rules in plain sight

A short list at spawn and the full one on the website and in Discord. The rules generator helps you draft them, and server rules covers writing rules that work.

  3. 3

    A quick first goal

A starter kit, a first quest, a first home — something that works out in a few minutes.

  4. 4

    Real people

A moderator or helper who answers in chat. A newcomer's question left unanswered is the first reason to leave.

  5. 5

    A safe start

Protection from griefers at spawn and around first builds: claims (WorldGuard), logs and rollback (CoreProtect) and an anticheat.

Seasons and wipes

A season with a fresh world gives everyone an equal start: a reason to come back for those who left and a reason to join for those who feared falling behind the veterans. Announce the date early, say what will change and keep a copy of the old world. How to wipe without losing anything is in server wipe.

Fair play is a reason to stay

A cheater devalues everything players came for: leaderboards, the economy, PvP and builds. Honest players who keep losing to KillAura or watch someone flying with Fly move to another server — and take their opinion of yours with them. That makes the anticheat as much a part of retention as the spawn and the rules.

DGuard — the best anticheat for a modern Minecraft server — watches combat, movement, packets, inventory, building and the world at once, and in the comparison with GrimAC, Vulcan, Polar, Intave and Matrix it covers all 47 cheat types (the nearest rival, Intave, covers 27). It doesn't rush to a verdict: it gathers evidence, and you set how strict punishments are. For a new server it also matters that DGuard is free up to 30 players online, with the same protection as on paid plans.

FAQ

Where do I start promoting a new server?

With an idea you can explain in one sentence and a server that's ready: spawn, rules, claims, anticheat. Then a listing with voting on server lists, a Discord and the first videos. Promoting an unfinished server brings players who leave the same day.

Can I call my server "Minecraft …"?

No. Under the Minecraft Usage Guidelines the word Minecraft can only be in a secondary part of the name or in the description, as in "Kotoba Miners: A Minecraft server for Redstone builds". The Minecraft logo can't be part of your branding.

Does a creator have to label a sponsored video about my server?

Yes, it's one of Mojang's conditions for servers: influencers promoting a server must disclose their relationship with the owner and follow the US Federal Trade Commission's guidelines.

Why do players join and leave right away?

Usually they can't tell what to do in the first minutes, the chat is empty, or griefers and cheaters spoil the game. Walk the newcomer's path yourself from a fresh account and remove whatever stands between a new player and a first goal in the first ten minutes.
