How to set a prefix
A prefix is the tag before a name in chat and the player list: [VIP], [Admin]. In LuckPerms it's set with lp group <group> meta setprefix <weight> "<prefix>" — the generator builds the whole command. For a single player, use user and the name instead of group.
Weight decides which prefix shows when a player has several groups: the higher wins. The LuckPerms developers advise leaving gaps between weights so you can slot in a new group later without renumbering.
A per-letter gradient is written with &#RRGGBB codes, which many chat plugins read. MiniMessage-based plugins take a <gradient> tag, and where HEX isn't supported you're left with the 16 colours — the generator picks the nearest. The prefix ends with a colour reset so the name isn't tinted.

Why doesn't the prefix show in chat?
LuckPerms doesn't format chat itself. You need Vault and a chat plugin that reads prefixes through Vault, such as EssentialsX Chat.
Why does my prefix show &# codes instead of colours?
Your chat plugin doesn't read that format. Try MiniMessage or the 16 colours — its documentation says which one it supports.
How do I make a small-caps prefix?
Turn on "Small caps": Latin letters become characters like ᴠɪᴘ. The game draws them with its fallback font, no resource pack needed.
