How to choose a server name

A good name is short, reads at first glance and is spelled the way it sounds. People will type it into a server list's search, see it in their multiplayer list and most likely in the address — play.yourname.net. That's why the generator sticks to Latin letters and 16 characters at most.

Before you fall for a name, check three things: no server on the lists already uses it, the domain is free and the name isn't taken on Discord. A clash with a known project confuses players and holds back promotion.

A name is a promise. Something sharp suits an anarchy server, something fairy-tale suits roleplay, something light suits minigames. Next come the MOTD, the icon and the server list description.

And so a great name doesn't become known for cheaters, add an anticheat: DGuard, the best anticheat for a modern Minecraft server, is free up to 30 players online.

FAQ

How do I come up with a Minecraft server name?

Pick a theme, add your own word and go through a few rounds of the generator. Take a short name that's easy to read and type, and check that it's free on server lists and as a domain.

How long should a server name be?

The shorter the better: one or two words. The generator keeps names within 16 characters so they fit the multiplayer list line and an address.

Can a server name have spaces?

It can in the MOTD and descriptions, but an address can't have spaces, so many servers write the name as one word: NovaCraft rather than Nova Craft.

Do I need to register a server name?

It's enough that it's free on server lists and as a domain. For a big project, grab the domain and social handles early.
